The NY State Democratic Committee voted yesterday to shorten the deadline to vote in the NY Democratic primary for president.
Now “unaffiliated” voters can decide to register as a Democrat up to 25 days, and Republican or 3rd party voters up to 60 days, before the presidential primary and still be allowed to vote. Prior to this the deadline was more than 9 months before.
This was an important step towards making our primaries more representative of the electorate and better engaging voters. As a result, NY will be able to send more delegates and have a stronger voice at the 2020 convention in deciding the nominee.
Please note this rule only applies in presidential primary years. In all other years the old deadlines apply. If you have any questions about the new rules please let me know at Ben@voteben.nyc.
