I’ve been working with the Fair Elections for New York campaign to bring NYC’s small donor matching fund program statewide. Through letter-writing and calls to elected officials we’ve lined up support from all three state officials representing the Upper East Side, Lenox Hill, and Roosevelt Island, as well as gotten the program included in proposed budgets from the governor and both houses of the legislature. However, there is still a danger that money for the small donor fund will be left out of the budget, effectively killing any hope for this effective campaign finance reform this year.
The Fair Elections for New York campaign is setting up an emergency call relay TODAY and TOMORROW to flood the Speaker and Senate Majority Leaders’ offices with calls. If you are interested in signing up for a time to call and tell Democratic leaders that you support public matching funds for State elections, you can do so here. The plan is to have a seamless stream of calls to Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins today and Speaker Heastie tomorrow (sign up for tomorrow on the second tab).
This is one of the most important reforms we can get through. It’s rumored that the Assembly is wavering in its support despite having passed this bill many times in the past. We can’t let them get cold feet now that it has a meaningful chance of becoming law.
